"Best Day Ever" (take II)

Hello everyone! It’s Annie and Willow with another blog.Today we started off the day with breakfast at the hotel with our group. Then we walked over to the Green Market which was very similar to the Rose Bowl Flea Market.

At the market, we broke off into groups of 3 or more and walked around and looked at the goods being offered. Annie particularly stood out negotiating with the sellers (shoutout to Mrs.High for teaching her well.) People bought bracelets, paintings, little figurines, etc. We all had so much fun shopping for family and friends and haggling prices. Then we got back onto the bus to head back to Langa.

When we arrived in Langa, we hung out, played cards, and passed around a soccer ball. Then we all headed inside for the political discussion. The panel consisted of 4 men, one from the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), Democratic Alliance (DA), the newly emerging Rise Party and an independent. The discussion covered their basic party ideas and then it was opened up for questions. One of the questions that prompted some very interesting answers was about violence against women which then transitioned the panel and audience to talk about women’s reproductive rights in the United States and how our two countries are similar but different in many ways. We also talked about how in South Africa there are many political parties and in the United States there are only two and we talked about the pros and cons of both. Then we finished the discussion and headed outside for a lunch with the iThuba and Leap students (we had superbly prepared sandwiches of PB+J, as well as chips and an apple).

After our lunch break, we had free time to do whatever we wanted. A group of us wanted to play basketball so we played on one of the courts across the street from the community center. After a tough loss against the iThuba students, Siviwe, and Mr. Caragher, our team of Cyanne, J.P., and Sanjay, decided soccer was better for us.  We played queen of the court and then we started to play with some kids who just got out of church. They loved Annie’s camera and had so much fun taking photos of themselves and us. Cyanne and I played tag with the little kids for a while and I don’t think I’ve ever been more sweaty than at that moment. Then we had to say our goodbyes and head back to Cape Town on the bus.

We had a lovely dinner of burgers, salads, and milkshakes and then went back to the hotel to debrief. Now we’re all packing up for Aquila and the game reserve drive tomorrow!
