Day 3 We (FINALLY) arrived in Cape Town... and make up for lost time:-)

After back to back red eye flights, we arrived in Cape Town early this morning. We met Siviwe, the executive director of iThuba and enjoyed a Poly-iThuba reunion at the airport. After experiencing the latest global phenomenon, epic traffic, we dropped our luggage at the hotel and were off and running. Our day started with Siviwe telling us about the origins of iThuba-Poly, how that relationship has grown over the years, and why Poly is so special in the life and achievement of iThuba and that iThuba's students have given Poly students much to consider; this symbiotic relationship between two partners separated by 10,000 miles but joined in purpose and spirit, embodies (in Siviwe's words) the key African concept of Ubuntu: I am because we are.

After two fatiguing days, we kept moving today. We started with a gorgeous drive out to Simon's Town for to see the African Penguins at Boulders Beach- super cute watching this "tuxed" birds/swimmers waddle across the sand. From there we ate at seaside restaurant, The Salty Dog, where our entrees consisted primarily offish and chips- the students were unanimous that lunch was a 10/10:-)  Then we jumped in our bus and drove another scenic route to the Cape of Good Hope (made famous when Bartholomew Diaz of Portugal reached this Cape only to turn back in 1488 due to winds and currents... then 10 years later Vasco da Gama figured out how to navigate the conditions and reached India, thereby "discovering" Europe's first waterways route to the East Indies; this new route opened the door for modern colonization and changed the world forever. We walked around the Cape of Good Hope (formerely called the Cape of Storms) and climbed to the Cape's lighthouse.

After a long nap in the 75 minute drive back to Cape Town, we settled into our rooms. We closed the day by dining at Hudson's (burgers and the most decorated milk shakes- the shakes are volcanos of sweet flavorings which literally are lava flowing over the brim of the glass). The kids loved their "calcium intake."

We are tired- went to bed at 8 (that is NOT a typo)... Tomorrow we start by sailing to Robben Island and then see the Langa Township.  Thanks for following along:-)
